The Benefits Are Clear
Why Do You Need Gutters?

Gutter systems are referred to by a variety of names including rain gutters, guttering, roof gutters, and others. The purpose of gutters is to direct water fall away from your roof, the side of your home, and the foundation. Left to stream down the side of the home, waterfall can damage your house from the roof to the foundation. Water that sits on the roof leads to more frequent roof replacement, and when water drains directly down the side of the house, it can settle into the foundation causing shifting and damage over time. Improper drainage can lead to a variety of issues including water leaks into the home, backsplash that discolors brick and siding, and soil erosion that makes it difficult to maintain landscaping and can cause water to back up into the foundation. A good gutter system can save you countless dollars on home repairs.

How We Work

We determine the size of a K-style gutter by measuring the back to the front of the widest part of the gutter. The size of gutter will depend on the size of your home, slope of your roof, average rain and snow fall in your area, and other determining factors.

We most often use five inch K-style guttering. This is the right option for most homes, and this is the industry standard for home rain gutters. Five inches may not sound like much, but when properly installed, they can handle almost any amount of water runoff. You can improve the efficacy of five inch gutter systems by combining them with three by four inch downspouts which decrease the likelihood of clogs, warping out the downspouts, or breaking away.

In rare cases typically for larger homes and garages, we may recommend six inch gutter systems instead. If your home has a roof made from tile or metal, we may need to use a six inch guttering system to ensure the rain water is properly directed. Larger roofs produce heavier water drainage and need larger gutters to capture and drain water effectively. Like five inch guttering systems, we utilize three by four inch downspouts to ensure maximum drainage and significantly reduce the likelihood of clogging. Six inch gutter systems are able to direct even large quantities of water away from your home. Additionally, we may encourage you to choose accessories like splash blocks, gutter covers, or downspout extensions to ensure the best results.

If you’ve ever seen a home with sectional guttering, you likely also noticed sagging sections, parts that were broken free from the home, and other issues related to this old fashioned system. Seamless gutters are not only less likely to leak or sag, they are crafted on-site to ensure they are perfect for your home. That means seamless gutters also offer a seamless fit tailored to any home that will last for decades.

Downspouts are the vertical parts of the gutter that do the heavy lifting carrying water down the side of your home and away from the foundation. To keep the downspout functioning effectively without leaking or coming free from the house, they must be adequately secured to the sides of the home using straps. Many companies attach downspouts to mortar rather than brick as this is a faster option. However, mortar deteriorates which will allow the downspouts to loosen, leak, or fall.

The first mistake that some gutter installation agencies make is installing gutters on top of the “drip edge” called roof flashing. This is a faster installation method, but it also allows water to run off the roof and drip between the gutter system and the fascia, a straight board that runs directly below the roof supporting roof tiles and guttering. In many cases, water that seeps between the gutter and fascia is able to sit on the wooden fascia leading to rot, mold, and other costly water damage down the line. We always properly install gutter systems behind the roof flashing, so the only place for the water to run is down the gutter system where it belongs.

Many homeowners don’t know that the way rain gutters are installed dramatically impacts their long term efficacy. There are many ways to install rain gutters, but in order to ensure your gutter system protects your home from wood rot, foundation issues, land erosion, and other concerns, they need to be installed correctly. The Pro Drain Gutters team promises to properly install and secure your gutters, help you select the right material and style of gutter, and do everything we can to make the gutter installation process completely painless.

Unfortunately, gutters cannot fix existing foundational concerns. However, installing a proper water drainage system once you have repaired any structure damage is essential to preventing future foundation concerns. If you’ve ever had to pay to fix a damaged foundation, you will not want to pay the steep prices for structural repair more than once. If your foundation is currently stable, you can avoid structural issues by installing an adequate gutter system before concerns arise. The cost of installing a gutter system can actually save you countless dollars in foundation repair, so protect your home by investing in the right system today.

Aluminum is the most affordable and longest lasting material for gutter systems, so it’s no surprise it’s also the most popular option. Aluminum gutter systems offer cost savings up front and over time. The initial cost of installation is significantly lower than other materials, but the long-term savings are exponential. In addition to having reduced maintenance costs since aluminum doesn’t rust and we use seamless materials, the value of a properly functioning gutter system in reduced home maintenance over the years cannot be measured. Your initial investment improve your long-term home investment, maintenance fees, and property values.
